Ready, steady, read!
Welcome to Cumbrian Books, a home for book lovers of the North – and the rest of the country!
First, a little bit about us. We recently moved to Cumbria with our three children. For me, it's a return home, and for the rest of the family, it's a new adventure. Moving house and setting up a business during the Covid pandemic has been a somewhat surreal experience. In the confusion of having everyone at home, supervising homeschool and looking after a toddler, we did find some time to read - a welcome escape from the mundane drudgery that lockdown creates. Picking out our first books for the online shop was the fun part. We'd like to offer you a broad range of titles, from page-turning fiction to arts and crafts manuals and cookery books. We've picked the best children's books for reading aloud multiple times without driving you insane. We'd like this to be your go-to site for new ideas on what to read - as well as the place to buy tried and tested titles.
To begin with, we've gone for a mix of fiction that will transport you to very different worlds, which is probably the closest any of us are going to get to travelling for a while. Journey to Texas with Larry McMurtry's The Last Kind Words Saloon, a tribute to the American West which traces the friendship of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday. Fans of McMurtry's Pulitzer Prize-winning Lonesome Dove will feel as though they have returned to familiar territory with this novel, set on the great plains, but complete with a new set of characters.
Staying in America, but moving to modern-day New York, Behold The Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue, is another gripping read. This is her debut novel, which won the PEN/Faulkner Award, and draws on her own experience pursuing the American Dream, having moved to the States from Cameroon.
If you fancy something a bit closer to home, why not try All Quiet on the Orient Express, which, despite its exotic title, is actually about a tourist who comes to the Lake District in a camper van and becomes ensnared by the local campsite owner in the ominous "out-of-season".
Crime novel aficionados will appreciate Lucy Foley's The Guest List, hailed as a "modern-day Agatha Christie classic" and brought to you by the same author as The Hunting Party.
Have a look around our website and see if there is anything which grabs your fancy. Since we're just starting out, we have lots of space to grow our collection of books. If you have any suggestions on titles we ought to stock, please get in touch – we’d be delighted to hear from you.
